Do you remember your favourite part of high school? Neither do we. Not Another Queer Movie, is meditation on a queer adolescence that never was; through narrative, parody, and improvisation, masc4masc queers the early 2000s high school movie canon we were all raised on. Not Another Queer Movie is a long-form, through-composed performance piece in three parts; the listener is guided through an elaborate, fan-fic infused narrative interspersed with parodic choruses. The middle section of the work sees masc4masc sonically describing the atmosphere of the narrative’s protagonists through dense guitar and vocal textures. Finally, the piece closes with an immensely vulnerable cover of My Chemical Romance’s emo anthem “Helena”.
masc4masc is the queercore performance art project of Sadie Hochman-Ruiz and Hillary Jean Young. Sadie and Hillary met one drunken Halloween in San Diego and knew that as a pair of queer Canadian art school weirdos, they were destined to be friends. While they were both in grad school together, they collaborated on a wide range of projects, including diy variety shows, queer dance parties, and a tour of their previous work, Dawson’sCreamo. Not Another Queer Movie is emblematic of masc4masc’s creative output; using minimal but eclectic means, masc4masc draws on diverse influences and evokes a nostalgia that is specific, earnest, and affecting.
